My Bell Tower
Ringing for Special Occasions

On this page you'll find details of all the bell ringing I've performed on my tower at Lyndenlea for special occasions, as distinct from any practice or "just for fun" ringing that I might do.

At present I don't plan to attempt any Quarter Peals or longer pieces of ringing, mainly because I'm not certain that my current state of health would allow me to do so (and ringing continuously for 40+ minutes by myself seems pretty tedious), but that may change in the future if my health improves or I get a silly idea for a particularly notable event...

See below for some Notes to the table, and for a very basic introduction to some of the terminology used you might find my article All About Quarter Peals to be of some help.

Notes to the table

The Bell Rung column shows, for each performance, which bell within the ring was assigned to me in the Abel simulator software. Needless to say, I only have one bell at Lyndenlea (and practically I can only ring one bell at a time anyway!), so all the other bells will have been "rung" programmatically by Abel.

In all performances for which I am listed as the Conductor, I have manually controlled the software's calling of "Go" (to start the method), any Bobs and Singles, and "Stand" (to conclude the ringing); "That's all" is automatically called by Abel at the end of the composition. For the earliest performances on 8th March 2025 (which contained no Bobs or Singles) this was achieved directly via the computer's keyboard, albeit with some difficulty whilst also handling my bell; but as of my first touch (i.e. a piece change-ringing with Bobs and/or Singles) as Conductor on 21st July 2025 I have instead used a set of three foot-switches to input the same keystrokes to the software, thereby keeping both of my hands free to ring the bell.

Where Abel is listed as the Conductor, I have chosen to rely on the software to automatically call the Bobs and Singles according to the composition that I've pre-configured. Even when I've manually controlled its calling of "Go" and "Stand", either via the keyboard or using my foot-switches, if Abel calls the Bobs and Singles (i.e. the tricky bits) it receives the Conductor's credit.

The Abel software enables me to change at will details such as the number of bells ringing, the strike note of the Tenor (the bell with lowest note) and even the tuning intervals between the bells; however, I've configured some settings that I intend to keep consistent throughout my ringing at Lyndenlea. Therefore, unless the footnote to a particular performance states otherwise, it should be assumed that the ring of bells is tuned to a conventional major scale with the Tenor striking G#, and that the number of bells matches what's being rung (with a covering Tenor where appropriate) as follows:

The bell sounds are generated using the sound files included with the software recorded at Worcester Cathedral (12 bells, Tenor 48-0-02 in B).
