Guildhall from Hambrook
Mile 5¾

This is the route that started it all off. Seeing the milestones between Mangotsfield and Oldland Common whilst driving to Keynsham every week, I wondered just how many there were still around – and the rest, as they say (and with no pun intended), is history!

Milestone 5.75 on the route to Bath from HambrookNational Grid Reference: 368225, 169575

Location: A431, Bitton, built into a wall opposite the junction with Church Lane.

Date recorded: Tuesday, 26 August 2008

Type of milestone: Inscribed Stone

Notes: Unfortunately, I was unaware that this was a milestone until after it had been heavily restored in August 2008. The stone is the original piece, but it has been refaced and the inscription recut, the work having been arranged by the local councillor who lived in the house behind the wall. Knowing that the other milestone in Bitton marked six miles to Bristol's Nether Gate, I undertook my own measurement from this point to the Corn Exchange (on Corn Street) and found it to be nearer SEVEN miles, which begs the question of whether the inscription was reproduced correctly.
